    Built on the success of the Armanino family’s basil pesto from their home town of Varese Ligure, near Genoa, Italy, Armanino started off in the 1800s selling fresh herbs and vegetables as Armanino Farms in the San Francisco area. The company exploded in popularity in the 1950s when William J. Armanino, son of the founder, applied freeze-drying technology to the company’s specialty herbs to allow them to remain fresh year-round. After Armanino Farms was sold in 1985, the modern Armanino as we know it was born, and today it sells upscale sauces, filled pasta, and precooked meatballs both nationally and internationally.
