Carr’s began as a small bakery established by Jonathan Dodgson Carr in the City of Carlisle in the year 1831, during the British Industrial Revolution. Carr’s Table Water was first made in the late 19th century as a refinement of the ships’ biscuit, replacing fat with water during preparation in order to keep the biscuits fresh even on long voyages. These new crackers exploded in popularity, and are still baked to this day with a traditional brick oven, following the proud tradition established by Jonathan Dodgson Carr himself.
